In their October 2010 report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, the Institute of Medicine indicated that if Americans' healthcare needs are to be met, nurses must be able to practice to the full extant of their education and competence. As an aspiring CNS, I went to graduate school and "mastered" the Advanced Nursing Practice track requirements. Educated and trained as an advanced practice nurse, I could better contribute to the health and welfare of all Virginians by being recognized as an APRN. I strongly support the Virginia Board of Nursing's effort to change regulatory language so that CNSs can advance healthcare in Virginia by being recognized as APRNs.
