We need to take action NOW to ban conversion therapy.

This dangerous and discredited practice aims to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. Sexual orientation and gender identity are not mental illnesses that need to be cured but rather the very fabric of one's identity, it is who they are. Conversion therapy uses rejection, shame, and psychological abuse to force young people to change who they are. No greater harm can be done to young person's self-esteem and mental health, then coercing or forcing them into such a program.

No young person should ever be shamed by a mental health professional into thinking that who they are is wrong. These practices have been proven to lead to depression, decreased self-esteem, substance abuse and even suicide attempts. Mental health professionals should provide care that is ethical and affirming for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people.
