As a licensed acupuncturist and bodyworker I am aware that dry needling (on paper) is myofascial trigger point therapy and NOT acupuncture. Because it utilizes acupuncture needles and is therefore invasive, I agree with the Physical Therapy Board that it requires advanced education. Because it is NOT acupuncture it does not require an acupuncture education.
To prevent confusion to the public I support mandating that any PT who performs dry needling must make clear both verbally and in writing that it is not acupuncture and cannot treat what acupuncture can treat.
I suppport and suggest implementing regulations that discourage PTs from slipping into the realm of acupuncture during a dry needling treatment. I also encourage regulations that clearly state the limits of dry needling, both for the PT's benefit and for the patient.
Safety to the public must be the primary objective.
