Physical therapists are very competent with needling - they have extensive education in human anatomy, including the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, and work with it every day. In addition to their doctorate training for physical therapy - their dry needling certification builds on their extensive education and skills. The PTs are completely able perform safe and effective dry needling as part of their overall PT treatment plans.
I have had both acupuncture and dry needling - the methods and goals are very different. Dry needling, by a physical therapist, has helped me greatly with my soft tissue muscle issues. Many medical professions overlap with tools and techniques - I believe that both dry needling by PTs and acupuncture can exist in a whole health environment.
