As a pet owner, I am extremely concerned about this proposed change. I agree that additional practical experience would benefit the students, but detailed policies need to be in place to be certain this practice is not misused. Owners MUST be informed in advance and given the opportunity to "opt out" of working with a student. First and second year students should be in the practical setting, but only as observers or completing tasks equivalent to those a Vet Assistant (not a Technician, who has more training) would undertake. Third-year students could begin to take on more responsibilities, but only under DIRECT supervision (e.g., in the room) of a veterinarian. All such policies and contingencies should be clearly spelled out in policy.
Were the policy to move forward as it is currently proposed, the first question I would ask when making an appointment for my pet would be EXACTLY who will be seeing my pet and be involved in their care when I am not in the room with the animal.
