As a licensed professional counselor in VA, I strongly oppose this petition. I believe there are distinct difference between the disciplines of counseling and psychology. Individuals have a choice to pursue credentialing as a psychologist or a counselor. I believe a change in the regulations would only serve to “muddy the waters” and create confusion within both disciplines, as well as confusion for consumers of counseling services. I am very proud of the education and training I received from a CACREP endorsed program. I believe graduation from a CACREP endorsed program in counseling should remain a requirement for licensure as a professional counselor in VA. COUNSELING and psychology are not one in the same.
