I oppose this petition

As a current second-year graduate student in a Counselor Education program, I have received a large amount of supervision, support, and practice while learning to become a professional counselor. I have been immersed in an environment that has truly prepared me to become a competent, ethical counselor. Psychology is a distinct area of expertise from counseling with different philosophical and practical differences from Counseling. Those graduating from a psychology program do not graduate with the same professional identity as those from a Counselor Education program. Similarly, I will not graduate with the same professional identity as a student graduating from a Psychology program. Professional counselors must acquire the same core curriculum and be held to the same standards so that we can ensure the welfare of our clients. I strongly oppose this petition; anyone becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor should obtain a degree in Counseling.
