Counseling and Psychology are two separate and distinct disciples. The Board of Counseling in Virginia determined it cannot ethically allow those with a psychology degree to practice as professional counselors. Additionally, the Board of Psychology determined it cannot ethically allow those with a counseling degree to practice as professional psychologists. This is a significant ethical issue! Counseling and Psychology have distinct differences related to philosophy, practice, and curriculum. 

There are 12 CACREP and six non-CACREP Counseling master's programs in VA, so there is plenty of opportunity to address students' and the public's needs. In addition, it is important to keep in mind that all 50 states have an LPC credential.

I truly feel for those who have been trained in a psychology program with the hope of becoming an LPC. However, the Board of Counseling is responsible for protecting and promoting public and client welfare. Thus, it is essential that professional counselors are prepared as counselors.
