Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

In support of this document and in support of transgender students!

My niece is a Virginia elementary school student and she is transgender. My brother and his family have already had to move school districts because of the transphobic environment they found in their former community. This was a burden, but not every family is so privileged to have it as an option; for equity's sake, it is SO IMPORTANT that you provide statewide guidance to EVERY SCHOOL in support of evidence-based best practices for inclusion and support of trans and other queer students. To many of the other commenters who seem to be against the idea of supporting trans students, let me say from seeing it play out in my own family: if you think it is a burden on YOU to have trans people in your life... it's far harder to BE that trans person who apparently makes you so uncomfortable. Every student deserves love and acceptance for who they are! (Love all students -- I thought Virginia was for lovers?) I support this Guidance Document because I support all Virginia students!
