We are parents to a 23 year old son who would love to live at Vanguard Landing. Due to a genetic mutation, he is unable to talk or to walk independently, and requires significant support for all his activities of daily living. He is charming, joyful, and social. He loves a crowd, music, and activities around. We can ensure that he gets good care while living at home with us, but our home lacks the social stimulation and group activities that he enjoys. Because of his disabilities, our son cannot make complex choices; caregivers gauge what he wants based on his expressions of happiness. He needs a fully supported living environment, and he wants to live among peers with various interests and abilities who can become his friends and companions. The fact that Vanguard Landing is 15 minutes from our home means we can continue to take him to church every week, which he absolutely loves and our congregation embraces him. Our family and friends can include him in activities and reunions that he would enjoy, and can visit him at will in his home. He can still go swimming at the city recreation center and participate in therapeutic horseback riding nearby. These are in addition to the many more opportunities to get out in the community that Vanguard Landing and staff can provide, opportunities that he does not have at home with our limited manpower and his transportation and support needs. We are certain that the support at Vanguard Landing will allow our son to participate in more community activities than he currently can at our home. Vanguard Landing is a community that can provide him with both what he needs and the companionship and activities that he enjoys. We hope he can use Medicaid Waiver services to make it possible for him to live there and have a stable, fulfilling life in a caring community.
