According to the Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP), Omega Protein has contributed over 1.1 million dollars to both Virginia Democrat and Republican politicians, with Governor Spanberger's Inaugural Committee recently receiving 50K. This money is given so that they may be granted favor by our elected politicians. As a publicly traded company, Omega's main concern is their shareholders, and not the health of the bay or the people of Virginia and Maryland. The Chesapeake Bay Reduction Fishery Cap limits the harvest of menhaden within the Bay to 51,000 metric tons annually, most of which is taken by Omega and its contractors. These fish are key component in the health of the bay, and the over fishing has hurt predators like rockfish and ospreys. As filter feeders, menhaden also play a large role in bay water quality. It is time our elected politicians stand up for Virginia and not those who line their pockets with money.
