I find it appalling that an extremist organization has attempted to drag Virginia into the current nationwide panic around trans individuals. This is not about health or safety - this is yet another effort from a special interest group to force further hatred & intolerance onto our trans citizens.
I am a cis woman, and I have shared private spaces (such as restrooms, locker rooms, and dressing rooms) with trans women on numerous occasions. I have never felt unsafe sharing those spaces with trans women. However, I have absolutely felt unsafe sharing those spaces with anti-LGBTQ extremists such as the ones filing this petition.
In addition to the negative effects that this ideology has on our LGBTQ+ citizens, there have been multiple instances of anti-trans panic causing cis women to be harassed, abused, and ejected from women's spaces. (See the recent cases of Liz Victor & Ansley Baker in MA.) Anti-trans ideology hurts everyone.
It is not the Department of Health's responsibility to dictate which Virginians do or don't deserve to be called women. Their responsibility is to address actual public health issues (such as the ongoing cross-country measles epidemic), not to waste everyone's time worrying about who's wearing a skirt on the tennis court.
