In addition, I am a parent of two teenagers - one cis female, one cis male - both of whom have played sports in high school. And both of my children have dear friends who are trans female, trans male, or non-binary. 

They are gobsmacked by this whole debate about trans kids in sports or locker rooms or bathrooms or classrooms or anywhere in our society. Respecting their friends' names and pronouns are nothing burgers to them, because that is just what you do. They have shared sleepovers with their trans friends, as well as laughter and tears and joy and fears.  

The kids affected by these hateful policies are their friends, and my children want them to be able to enjoy all that they are able to enjoy. 

As a parent, I am more nervous about high schools' concussion protocols than I am about whether a trans kid is in the locker room with my child. As a parent, I am more concerned about high schools' policies on bullying - physical, as well as mental and emotional - than I am about who is using which bathroom. As a parent, I am more concerned about high schools ensuring that the educational as well as the social development of the teens entrusted to their care are being met. All teens.
