supporting the classification of Kratom as a Schedule I controlled substance

Kratom, currently unregulated, masquerades as a mere supplement, yet stories of dependency, health problems, and lives disturbed are rising in our midst. The National Poison Data System experienced 357 calls regarding Kratom in 2018. The CDC highlighted that 909 accidental overdose deaths in 2022 involved Kratom, with 53 of those deaths occurring in Virginia. A total of 489 adverse effects have been reported in the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System from 2004 to 2021, with the most common event being death, followed by addiction and seizure. An opioid like withdrawal is associated with Kratom use and case reports of neonatal abstinence syndrome are documented.  We are not simply engaging in a legal act; we are engaging in an act of love, an act of protection, and an act of faith.
