As someone who battles the relentless agony of small fiber neuropathy, I am deeply disheartened by the proposed ban on kratom supplements. My journey with this excruciating condition has been a daily struggle, marked by intense pain that traditional medications, including opioids, have failed to alleviate without severe side effects. I was prescribed opioids for 3 years and to get the same result, they had to keep increasing my dose. I felt like a zombie after everything was said and done and I just couldn’t let myself go down the road of addiction. Kratom, on the other hand, has been a beacon of hope for me and many others in similar predicaments. I have been taking kratom responsibly for over 5 years now and I have never had to increase my dose. People can become addicted or overdose on all sorts of substances. We don’t outlaw aspirin because too much can kill you. We regulate it and that’s what should happen with kratom as well
Kratom’s safety profile is considerably better than opioids. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that over 70,000 people died from drug overdoses in 2019, with opioids being involved in nearly 70% of those deaths. In contrast, kratom, a natural supplement, offers pain relief without such dire consequences. Studies and anecdotal evidence suggest that kratom can effectively manage pain with a lower risk of dependence and severe side effects.
Furthermore, the ban on kratom fails to consider the stark reality faced by chronic pain sufferers. According to a study published in the "Journal of Pain Research," untreated chronic pain leads to a significant risk of depression and suicide. It is estimated that every day, 22 veterans and countless civilians succumb to the despair of living with chronic pain by taking their own lives. This heartbreaking statistic underscores the critical need for safe, effective pain management options like kratom.
I urge the authorities to reconsider this ban and recognize the life-changing benefits that kratom offers to those of us who live in constant, debilitating pain. For many, kratom is not just a supplement but a lifeline. Denying access to this natural remedy forces us back into a cycle of unbearable pain and potentially dangerous pharmaceutical alternatives. Please, consider the human lives that hang in the balance and the desperate need for compassion and understanding in pain management policies.
