Description of Proposed Guidance Document Changes

The proposed changes to the The Board of Education Approved Courses to Satisfy Graduation Requirements for the Standard and Advanced Studies Diplomas in Virginia Public Schools include the following: Page 3: School Courses for the Exchange of Data (SCED) Code correction Page 7: Addition of the African American History and the AP African American Studies courses to allow for substitution of World History I course or the World Geography course for the purpose of satisfying the history and social studies credit requirements to align with the passing of HB182/SB427. Page 8: Addition of the Cambridge International (CI) English General Paper: English 10 course as a substitution. Page 8-9 Footnotes: revised for clarity and technical edits. Page 9: Removal of a paragraph to align with the passing of HB595 which removes the provisions that certain courses must be completed for the completion of an Advanced Studies Diploma. This legislation clarifies that students transfer in during or after grade 10, who is simultaneously pursuing the Advanced Studies Diplomas and an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma are not required to take certain courses listed for the Advanced Studies Diploma, including substitutes for the Virginia and U.S. history and government courses and for the economics and personal finance credit requirements. Page 10: Clarifies the SCED codes that should be used with certain AP and IB courses. Pages 11-12: Language to clarify the sequencing and proficiency progressions for World Language courses for the field. Page 15: Correction to the course substitution title for provisions in Economics and Personal Finance for students with disabilities who are eligible for Credit Accommodations, may be determined by their Individualized Education Program (IEP). The proposed updates are necessary to ensure appropriate notation of course enrollments in the Master Schedule Collection (MSC) by school divisions and that appropriate credits are used to satisfy graduation requirements, as well as to clarify answers to common questions from the field.
