Continuing Education

I am a member and EMT for both the local volunteer fire department and rescue squad. To maintain my EMT-I certification, I am required to have 48 recertification or continuing education hours every 3 years. This doesn't seem like much time, but when you have to track down classes to take, it is sometimes quite a challenge. However, it is a good program and keeps everyone abreast of new methods and techniques. This recert program is set up and approved by the Virginia Department of Health. I have to find classes in certian fields or categories ( i.e. airway, medical, trauma, pediatrics, legal, etc. ). What I understand of the proposed regulations for continuing education for surveyors is limited, but it seems to lack structure. It is important to have classes preapproved and structured so the surveyor knows what class to look for to meet the required needs. The classes need to be in categories the surveyor can use and ones that DPOR will accept ( i.e. legal, methods of surveying, right-of-ways, titles, etc.). I don't want to loose a day from work to take a class, pay someone $300, and find out the state won't accept the class. My time is valuable to me as I'm sure it is to all other surveyors. If you would like me to support your continuing education plan, I would like to see a system set up that would let me know what I need to take and some assurance that my time and money will be accepted and not wasted. The prices of these classes must be regulated by the state or "carpetbagger" instructors will flood in here and take advantage of the situation to make a killing.
