Mandatory continuing education requirement for PEs

Electrical engineering is a constantly evolving field that demands its participants stay abreast of the most recent innovations in, and the application of that, technology.  The majority of continuing education I have participated in over my career are usually introductory type activities and typically lack the rigor one needs to adequately maintain any credible level of engineering expertise.  For a continuing education program to be credible, it would require graduate level courses be taken.  This requirement involves a tremendous commitment.  Most of us working 80-hour weeks in this highly competitive business are already taking the necessary steps needed to, not just maintain our engineering proficiency, but enhance that proficiency through courses, in-company training, and countless out-of-work hours studying papers, texts, and articles on these subjects.  While I believe we need to ensure the proficiency of our engineering talent in the United States is top rate, I also believe the nature of this business already forces our engineers to be well positioned with respect to currency and proficiency.  Ever since obtaining my first degree, my career is defined by a constant learning environment that has only increased in scope and importance over the years.

Respectfully,

William Jones
