Continuing Education Comment

My comments echo many of the concerns already addressed in this forum. The process of becoming a licensed professional engineer demonstrates a commitment to the profession and furthermore; attainment of such a license identifies the individual as meeting the minimum level of knowledge to practice the profession. The Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation should be most concerned with corrective action against individuals and corporations who fail to uphold the standards of professional behavior set forth in the current regulations.

Continuing Education (CE) is at best a contentious subject; one which I believe the board needs to fully investigate and understand prior to implementing a CE program. I also believe that any proposed CE requirement should be broad in approval scope to allow opportunities from various resources to be applied toward that requirement. Such venues could include seminars, internal company sponsored technical or management training, membership and participation in professional organizations, internet based training, etc. Likewise, approved course content should be broad in scope; encompassing not only technical subjects within one’s current discipline, but also education from other engineering and technical disciplines, project management, general management, law, and ethics as well. Training courses and seminar participation required for other certifications that licensees may posses should also count toward any credit build; helping alleviate some portion of the expense and time burden required to maintain currency across one’s certification portfolio.
