In reading some of the other comments on this page, I am reminded of a prominent quote of the American civil rights movement- "When you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression." Some seem to think that the mere recognition and protection of transgender individuals is a personal attack on them and their children, despite no such language existing in the document. As a student in the Virginia public school system who has met transgender students, I can attest that they are unsurprisingly human beings, and kind, intelligent ones at that. They are not "mentally ill", and it is that exact harassment that we are trying to protect them from. I am surprised at the self-proclaimed Christians who support and engage in such un-Christlike behavior. It seems that Jesus would respect these individuals and their right to exist the same as everybody else, would he not? Confronting bigoted and mean-spirited world views with protections for those they dislike is not oppression. It is the equality preached by the Christian God and guaranteed to us by the Constitution of the United States. If it was not clear already, I am in full support.
