Trans youth are at disproportionately high risk for depression and suicide. Human Rights campaign reports place suicide attempt rates between 29.9% and 50%, depending on the gender of the respondent. A supportive community makes a massive difference in the emotional health of trans students, and that starts at the bottom with having their basic rights respected. If Virginia believes in the potential success of all students in its school systems, it should begin by ensuring all students have the right to be respected for their gender and presentation. Trans youth are far more at risk than they are a risk to anyone else. Since they are legally required to attend school, it should be a place where they are protected.
