Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

STRONGLY OPPOSE

I strongly oppose these policy changes because they will endanger vulnerable young people by allowing more opportunity for sexual abuse. I would have been horrified as a young lady to be made to change in front of a member of the opposite sex, even if that person was allegedly not interested in me. This policy ENDANGERS our children, it does not PROTECT them. It surrenders to the wishes of a small minority while ignoring the safety of the majority. What makes the wishes of a few transgender students more important than the rest of the students? Is the school system bowing to the popular trends of the day rather than standing for what is best for the students? What happens when students claim that they are neither male nor female, non-binary, and they wish to go back and forth between locker rooms depending on whether they feel more male or more female that day? This is certainly a recipe for disaster.
