Do it Once and Do it Right
I feel that continuing education can only help the profession so I give a qualified ‘yes’ to the proposal. However, not applying standards and guidelines for accreditation is shortsighted and leaves a question mark for all regulates. What counts as a CE credit?
As an example of questionable continuing education, I recently attend a three day seminar in Savannah consisting of 24 hours of training. The purpose of the seminar was to present the latest technology in hydrographic surveying and training on the use of the latest version of software. I believe that this type of continuation education should qualify as meeting the CE requirement. It is state-of-the-art technology presented by the software developers. Would the DPOR consider this training as CE worthy?
Additionally, there are pretty good but incredibly expensive courses out there. I have taken a couple of courses lasting one day and costing as much as the three day seminar in Savannah.
I appreciate the educators who posted their comments. A professor of engineering, surveying, etc. required to take continuation for the same subject is unnecessary and I agree that they deserve an exemption.
I believe that the DPOR should review the processes from neighboring states before putting this proposal into law.
