Although Acupuncture and Trigger Point Dry Needling (TPDN) both utiliize a monofilament needle, the treatment goals and technique are distinctly different. TPDN has been an effective treatment tool utilized by Physical Therapists for many years, is firmly within the scope of Physical Therapy practice, and is supported by a growing body of evidence. In-depth knowledge in anatomy, physiology, and clinical reasoning prepares Physical Therapists well to safely and effectively perform TPDN. The current regulations proposed by the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy comprehensively support public safety and should be fully enacted.
