This past September, the Virginia Board of Health passed a law that could shut down all or most of the abortion clincs in the state (an esitmate 15 of 20). Why are we fighting health care by creating TRAP laws that will force abortion clinics closed? Access to safe, legal abortions is important because there other less safe, less legal alternatives women will be forced to choose if abortion clinics are not open to them. The other option for women will have is the unnecessary burden of traveling long distances in order to receive this care. And for what? Hallways of a certain width? A certain number of parking spaces? I stand firmly against the TRAP law that does not exempt current clinics. There is no reason to expect already constructed and established clinics to conform to targeted construction regulations as these impose a heavy economic burden. These regulations are a poorly veiled attempt at stripping women of their right to safe and legal abortions and cannot be tolerated.
