Mandatory Continuing Education - What's the Problem?

Get with the program. NCEES endorses the establishment of continuing education/professional competency as a means for license renewal.  Over 30 states currently require some form of continuing education including every state that borders VA with the exception of MD. (See http://www.ncees.org/rcep/cpc.php to see what states currently require mandatory continuing education and what they require.)  And the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) also requires continuing education. (See http://www.bcsp.org/bcsp/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=27&Itemid=31)

So it's a just a matter of time before this becomes mandatory in Virginia.  As such, it's important that our comments focus on how we can make this requirement more palatable (i.e., not overly burdensome to obtain).  Continuing education/professional competency programs must be readily available, cost effective, consistently accepted among the states, and have intrinsic value to the licensee.  But maybe more importantly, continuing education needs to improves the quality of professional practice in order to protect the public from incompetent engineers.

And if folks don't want to renew their licenses because of this new requirement, so be it.
