Why prevent someone who wants help to get it?

Why is it that the State of Virginia is wanting to prohibit Reparative Therapy?  If you have people who are looking for help to change their lives ridding themselves of unwanted attractions why are wanting to make it illegal?  These are people asking for help to remove themselves from a life where they are at greater risk for HIV; depression; alienation from family and friends; alcoholism; and drug addiction.  This is not to say everyone fits the profile just an overview of the many proven problems not to mention higher rates of suicide with same sex attractions.

This appears to be more 'thought police' restrictions because someone does not like this type of therapy.  How many smokers quit cold turkey without assistance when they first tried?  In current society there are hypnotists who help some; others who used nicotine gum; a patch; and others that tried all of the aforementioned without success.  Why take away this option from those who want to explore a way to leave their same sex attraction filled life behind?
