85%+ parents of disabled children are divorced- most single parents. Many on Medicaid themselves b/c they were left by a spouse/partner and not only can they NOT afford bills and healthcare costs for special child, but they also cannot hold down a job due to the child's need for care. The schools regularly close, they are on break in spring, summer, 2 teacher in-services/month in many counties, two weeks in December, and plenty of other misc days. How is a parent and their child(ren) meant to survive without a primary breadwinner? This extra pay makes an indelible mark in the health of their family- it could be life or death.
