Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

Some of these comments are quite laughable. A huge reason why the level of ignorance in America is so high is due to the immense level of incompetency that seems to run rampant through our society. If I were given a chance to ask those in this comment section that oppose Cultural Competency amongst teachers, the first thing I would ask them would be to define what the term even means. I think that alone will render such opinions invalid. How can you oppose what you don’t understand, my friends?

It’s necessary for educators to have some understanding of various cultures and identities, because a lot of their students come from different backgrounds. Culture is a part of significant life (though it seems only those with it would actually understand that). As a minority student myself who has spent nearly her entire education in PWIs, being misunderstood on a cultural basis made academia a tough world to be in. Also, as an Educator in training, I have made it my mission to be cognizant of diversity so that my future students will feel welcomed and understood in my care. This is needed.

But hey- if you don’t like it… leave:)
