Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

Cultural Compentency Training disrespectful of loving teachers who want all their student to succeed

It is interesting that the majority of teachers, at least in the past, became teachers because they loved children and loved to teach.  Math and Science are magical subjects. Literature is what stirs the mind. History solves problems for the present & future.  These are the subjects teachers should be teaching and loving to teach.  I am saddened that we are not honoring teachers that do just that.  I am against this document because your bottom line is not equity & equality, but disrespecting teachers by saying they are not capable  & they need to be questioned & controlled.  Exactly how many teachers in our school must be reprimanded for racism?  All of them? Yes racism is terrible, but if a teacher shows racism, I am sure the Board of Education can reprimand or sanction that individual.  You are assuming that teachers are trying to hurt our wonderful children. In most cases they love to  instruct our children and make learning fun. They want to be instrumental in their children's character building & education.  We should  not be demeaning teachers, or we will be losing our great teachers for those who are mediocre.  Remember the great ones can always find jobs in industry etc. which is not as demanding as teaching.  This document is very, very sad.
