Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

Yes to CCT, No to Culture Wars

Hello Everyone,

I am a born and raised Virginian who grew up being taught in Fairfax Country Public Schools. Teaching students an accurate and inclusive history of our state would not only give our next generation a more comprehensive understanding of our past, but also the tools to make sure they don’t make the same mistakes and pit falls previous generations fails to avoid.

Although opponents of this policy would like to say that this is “CRT” or “Woke Indoctrination”, I would like to remind people of the following:

-CRT isn’t even being taught in K-12 grade schools. It is a academic legal concept that was created in order to study systematic racism in society. The only chance anyone can learn this would be in a secondary educational setting (University, Community College, etc.).

-The opposition to “CRT being taught in schools” is mostly being funded by shady conservative dark money (The Heritage Foundation, Patriot Front, etc.) in order to push out educators and school board members perceived as “liberal” in order to push a more conservative agenda (oh the irony).

-Republicans are using the momentum of “CRT being taught in schools” as a means of helping their election chances for the coming November elections.

Case in point, the opposition of CCT is not acting out of good faith, rather they’re intimidating and harassing local educators into teaching a partisan agenda that would only benefit conservatives and severely harm the quality of education in our state. For a better under of this issue, I have included a NPR interview by Terry Gross who goes way more in depth behind the motivations of said conservative groups and their attacks on public education in the link below.

Other than that, I plead you to please stand with our educators and students rather than the “anti-CRT” crowd who have no actual care for the state of learning in Virginia . Our education systems deserve better than partisan politics.

Sincerely,

Louis A.
