Cultural competency is not a liberal policy being thrust upon the nation. It is a measure we take to ensure that each student feels seen, heard, and comfortable in an environment they have to spend 5 days a week in, every week during their formative years. These are crucial years for child development, and making sure that our children’s teachers are culturally competent enough to understand the sensitive issues that touch each student’s life is a fundamental part of building an environment that these kids can thrive in.
