Wind energy is not beneficial for Virginia

There is a lot of hype about wind energy but Virginia government should consider these facts:

A NREL map of Virginia presented in the plan shows 80 meter hub hight average wind speeds in Virginia. The highest wind speeds shown on the map in the west are 4 meters per second or less. Typical industrial wind turbines require at least 3 m/s to get started. No substantial or dependable energy will be produced.

The wind industry reports that capacity factors on the order of 35 to 45% can be expected. This is a false claim. PJM, the grid manager in the mid-Atlantic area rates wind at 13%. The wind industry talks about 'installed capacity".Installed capactiy is the amount of power that can be generated if the turbines are working at 100% production all the time. Wind energy is very distructive, requiring about 5 acres of clearing for each 3 MW turbine. 100 MW of installed capacity will require destroying about 160 acres of wildlife habiat that will only produce about 13 MW of energy at best.

Wind energy does not reduce carbon emissions. Because wind is intermittent, fossel fuel plants continue to operate at idle so they can immediately ramp up when the wind stops blowing. Studies in Europe and Western US states continue to report no reduction of carbon emisions due to increased wind energy usage.

July and August are periods of peak energy use in  the US. These months also happen to be periods of the least wind available in Virginia. Wind resources are counter cycle to energy needs.

The appalachian mountains that are reported to be the best locations for onshore wind energy in Virginia and also happens to be the magratory corridor to the genetically unique Eastern Golden Eagle. Wind turbines are known to some as Bird Cuisinarts killing thousands of all types of birds each year. Those that advicate for stopping the use of fossel fuels will also be the ones out decrying the destruction of endangered birds.

Wind energy ruins rural life due to shadow flicker and low frequency noise.

We can hope wind energy would solve our energy needs, but hope does not make it so.
