Advocate for PT’s Dry Needling

Physical therapists are the terminal authority evaluating and treating neuro-musculo-skeletal disorders.   Many tools are used by PT’s, i.e. their hands, tape, rollers, ice/heat, measuring devices, biofeedback, US, electrical stimulation and needles.

Needles, in particular, are just a tool that no particular profession owns.  However, combined with physical therapists unique and extensive body of knowledge (doctoral degree in physical therapy and continued education in dry needling), these tools have provided a safe therapeutic benefit to patients, as further evidenced by scientific research.

Physical therapists are not claiming to practice acupuncture, nor are identifying themselves as acupuncturists.  Physical therapists are trained and certified to safely practice dry needling, using a shared tool within the medical community.  Physical therapists education, clinical reasoning and application of dry needling are vastly different than the acupuncturist.

Regardless of health professions, each field carries their own unique body of knowledge with a responsibility to deliver maximal care for the benefit of the patient alone.  And ultimately, physical therapists are practicing dry needling within their scope of practice.
