Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

Transgender Students

I once worked with a male to female transgender person. This person had ALL of the surgery, psychiatric counseling and was taking hormones.  I disagree with the concept of someone being able to change their birth gender, however, if this fiction is to continue to be allowed then it seems to me that before someone is legally declared to be a member of the gender opposite their birth gender then they should have had all of the counseling, all of the surgery and be taking the appropriate hormones to at least achieve the appearance of a person of their desired gender.  It seems to me that anyone who has not had all of the surgery, counseling, taking hormones, etc. should NOT be regarded as a person of their desired gender and should NOT use facilities for persons of their birth gender.  If this fiction of being able to change one's gender is to continue then separate facilities for those who object to using the same facilities as transgender persons should be provided. I also think that our state and nation is getting into something very dangerous when our young people are taught that the truth is something which can be manipulated.
