Transportation is an important energy area

Virginia produces practically no oil and is heavily dependent on imported and highly polluting fuel (gasoline, diesel) for transportation over Virginia fuels, local energy, or cleaner domestic fuels.  Virginia can consider cleaner domestic fuels in energy planning.

  1. Cleaner Virginia fuels (natural gas, renewable natural gas, biodiesel, ethanol)
  2. Cleaner Local energy carriers (hydrogen, electricity) made from clean local energy sources
  3. Cleaner fuels (propane, renewable propane, electric, hydrogen, natural gas renewable natural gas, ethanol, biodiesel).
  4. Cleaner consumer fuels reflecting vehicles produced already by automakers at volumen (electricity -HEV, PHEV, BEV- and ethanol)

Virginians spend more than $30 million ($33.5 million) per day at current rates on gasoline and diesel fuels from other states and countries.  (This is based on price and volume figures in April 2018 looking at Energy Information Administration for consumption, and public retail fuel prices.

  • 9,500,000 gallons per day of gasoline  $2.50 per gallon,  is $23.750 million per day.
  • 3,500,000 gallons per day of diesel  $2.80 per gallon,  is $9.8 million a day.
  • 13 million gallons per day of gasoline and diesel is $33.5 million a day.

Pollution from transportation is significant, and transportation is the leading fossil fuel combustion source of carbon dioxide in Virginia.  Transportation fuel is by far gasoline and diesel.  Reductions in gasoline and diesel emissions may be helpful to Virginia environmental goals.

Federal programs and regulations are being discarded, creating a gap in regulations and programming that Virginia previously used as pillar of change.
