I am a sophomore at the University of Notre Dame. I have visited the L’Arche GWDC communities multiple times and have had very formative experiences as a part of this community. I think this is very dependent upon the existing definition of group home. This redefinition, in taking away choice from the members of L’Arche communities, takes away an integral part of the witness provided by the community. I was greatly moved in my visits by the dignity that all members of the communities see in the members of the communities with intellectual disabilities. This redefinition infringes upon the dignity that is so important to L’Arche communities. For the sake of others in the future who will have experiences similar to my own, please reconsider this definition of group Home to respect the dignity of all members of the L’Arche communities.
