Accountability. Transparency. These are absolutely needed in VA shelters.
Too many healthy/treatable and adoptable animals are killed for no good reason in "shelters" which make a mockery of the name.Too many are killed for convenience, even when there sreare empty cages, even when there are reputable rescues willing to pull the animal. Too many "accidents" occur so animals are not scanned, are not documented, are not advertised and are hidden in back rooms, are improperly impounded, and are killed in violation of stray hold laws.
Shelters should operate with the sincere goal of saving lives including reuniting lost pets, TNR of community cats, partnering with reputable rescues, and promoting adoptions. Sadly, some like PETA prefer to kill rather than do the work of treating/ reuniting/ adopting. The theft and immediate murder of Maya by a long time high-ranking PETA staffer was no accident nor any misunderstanding.
Transparency and accountability demand proper record keeping. Animals deserve no less than the best life-saving efforts of those entrusted with their care. I support this petition full heartedly because it is clear some shelters have been hiding a lot of unethical and unjustified killing. "Light is the best disinfectant", indeed!
