Commenter: Jeanne Robinson,SEIU Homecare Worker

The importance of funding programs to allow family members to provide services for relatives .

My name is Jeanne’s Robinson, and I am a Retired Social  Worker from the City of Richmond Department Social Services and Benefits Supervisor and Mental health Skill-builder for women and children. I retired from the City of Richmond in 2014 and continued to work part time as a Mental Health Counselor . In 2017 I became a HomeCare worker for my grandson that is diagnosed with down syndrome. The reason I gave up my part time a job to provide the services is because I know how important it is for family members to take care of their loved ones and this will prevent the loved one from going into the system, or being abused , that will cause the system more money than it does then to pay for these home care workers. But in order to continue to provide the services, we must have a decent salary, sick days and other benefits in order to keep the services in place. If the services are given out to outside agencies, it will cause the government more money because the  children will be need of more mental health services , they might become separated from their families or start turning to other means of handling their depression and frustration.
