Interpretation services

When providers serve the deaf, there needs to be reimbursement for interpretation services. This is a basic human right, to have effective communication. If this was a covered service, there would be more providers to this population available as well as more interpreters available to serve. Currently, this is out of pocket for the provider when any meeting is called to discuss any issue. Whoever calls the meeting is responsible for providing the interpreter. This is reimbursed to DARS and CSB’s but not to other DD Waiver service providers.  This is a service that should be reimbursed as it is a needed service. We wouldn’t expect any one else to pay 70.00 to 100.00 per hour to be understood in their language. This would be for meetings regarding behavior, rules and regulations, organizational changes and other pertinent information, not as a daily service. Everyone should have free access to their own effective communication.
