The goal of RGGI is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power generation. These reductions have short-term benefits of lowering air pollution and risk of respiratory disease in neighborhoods located near power plants. Protecting Virginians from premature death due to lung cancer, asthma, and other diseases should be a strong enough reason to keep RGGI.
In addition, Virginia uses its RGGI proceeds to fund necessary health & safety repairs in low-income households through the Weatherization Deferral Repair Program. These repairs then prepare homes to receive energy efficient upgrades, which can improve health and lower energy bills for the state’s most impoverished residents. Please continue protecting the lives of millions of Virginians and KEEP RGGI!
