Parent Involvement Is Key

The proposed changes to special education regulations take away a key component to successful school partnerships.  Parental Involvement is key for children and educators alike,  As the relative of a child who needed special education services at various points during her academic career, parental involvement was key as her parents were able to share with educators and staff additional information about her needs and meeting those needs within the school system.  My niece needed more special education services in elementary school but by the time she made it to middle and high school, she required minimal services and her parents requested the reduction when it became apparent that she no longer needed the added support.  My niece graduated in June of 2008 with a regular diploma.  Had her parents not advocated for this, she would have received a modified diploma or certificate of attendance that would have made it difficult for her to continue her education at a higher level or join the Armed Forces.

Parents enrich the special education process and the school system with new ideas and innovative techniques for working with  their children.  Reduction of that involvement is a disservice to children and the community.  In the quest to cut funding for special services, a key component is being overlooked.  No one wins if children are not properly educated.  Parents need to be involved and encouraged to advocate for the needs of their children.   Reduction in parental involvement in the special education process may lead to a reduction all parental involvement in the school.  Parents and educators work together to create a community of learning that enriches the lives of children. Please work to retain the current level of parental involvement in the special education process.
