Purpose of the meeting PURPOSE OF THE MEETING: The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will host the Second Community Engagement Meeting for the Pigg River, Poplar Branch, Fryingpan Creek and Beaverdam Creek Clean Up Plan on June 25th, 2024, at 4:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public and any member of the public may participate in the proceedings. The meeting participants will assist in the development of a cleanup plan, also known as an Implementation Plan (IP), to address bacteria impairments in the Beaverdam Creek lower segment and benthic impairments within the Pigg River, Poplar Branch, Fryingpan Creek and Beaverdam Creek in Franklin, Pittsylvania, and Bedford County, Virginia. The impaired segments have been listed in Virginia’s § 303(d) list of impaired waters for failing to meet Virginia’s water quality standards due to an exceedance in E. coli and sediment. The meeting will discuss recommendations on implementation strategies, associated costs, outreach, and funding opportunities, implementation timeline, sediment and bacteria reduction goals and begin discussing the draft report.
