| Purpose of the meeting PURPOSE OF THE MEETING: The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will host the first Community Engagement meeting to address the water quality impairment in the Pigg River, Beaverdam Creek, Fryingpan Creek and Poplar Branch area on April 18th, 2024, at 4:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public and any member of the public may participate in the proceedings. The meeting participants will assist in the development of a cleanup plan, also known as an Implementation Plan (IP), to address bacteria impairments in the Beaverdam Creek lower segment and benthic impairments on all seven segments within the Pigg River, Poplar Branch, Fryingpan Creek and Beaverdam Creek Franklin, Pittsylvania, and Bedford County, Virginia. These segments have been listed in Virginia’s § 303(d) list of impaired waters for failing to meet Virginia’s water quality standards due to an exceedance in E. coli and sediment. The meeting will discuss recommendations on implementation strategies, associated costs, outreach, and funding opportunities, and begin discussing the draft report.
