Purpose of the meeting
The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will host the second meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) on Tuesday, July 11, 2023. The meeting is open to the public and any member of the public may participate in the proceedings. The TAC will assist in development of a cleanup study, also known as Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs), to address benthic impairments in select tributaries of the Middle Fork of the Holston River. Segments include Cedar Creek, Hall/Byers Creek, Hutton Creek, Tattle Branch, Middle Fork of the Holston River, and Greenway Creek, in Smyth, Washington, and Wythe Counties, and the Towns of Chilhowie, Marion and Glade Springs, which have been listed on Virginia’s § 303(d) list of impaired waters for failing to meet Virginia’s water quality standards due to an altered benthic community. DEQ is updating and revising two previously completed TMDLs, ‘Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Development for Cedar Creek, Hall/Byers Creek, and Hutton Creek’ that was completed in December of 2003 and ‘Bacteria and Benthic Total Maximum Daily Load development for Middle Fork Holston River’ completed in October 2009. The meeting will discuss the incorporation of input from the public in the first TAC meeting and the resulting allocation scenarios for this project. Information on this study can be found here: https://www.deq.virginia.gov/our-programs/water/water-quality/tmdl-development/tmdls-under-development In the event of inclement weather, the meeting will be rescheduled.
