Purpose of the meeting The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) announces the Steering Committee Meeting to develop an Implementation Plan (IP) to restore water quality in several Mattaponi River watersheds. MEETING DESCRIPTION: The Mattaponi IP Steering Committee meeting participants will provide feedback to enable DEQ to refine the draft IP report that will subsequently be presented to the public for formal review and comment. The Implementation Plan report will explain the Plan’s development and recommendations to restore water quality in the Mattaponi River IP watershed plan area. The purpose of the Steering Committee is to review and share feedback on preliminary recommendations for best management practices to reduce bacteria coming from multiple sources within the watershed. The group will suggest ways to refine the IP report before its formal presentation in a public meeting to be held in late May or early June, 2019. DESCRIPTION OF AREA COVERED BY THE PLAN: The Mattaponi River watershed is very large, and comprised of many smaller watersheds. Fourteen smaller watersheds were included in a 2016 Bacteria TMDL report for the Mattaponi River, after they had been identified as impaired and included on the Clean Water Act §303(d) list for not supporting Virginia’s water quality recreation use standard due to the presence of fecal bacteria. All of these watersheds will be addressed in the Implementation Plan, including: Brock Run, Chapel Creek, Doctors Creek, Glady Run, Maracossic Creek, Mat River, Matta River, Mattaponi River, Motto River, Po River, Polecat Creek, Poni River, Reedy Creek and Root Swamp. Additional stream segments on Polecat Creek and on the Mattaponi River between its confluences with Polecat Creek and Chapel Creek have recently been identified as impaired due to the presence of fecal bacteria, and these areas are also being addressed in the IP. The Implementation Plan watershed area falls primarily within Caroline, King and Queen, King William and Spotsylvania Counties; and a small section lies within Orange County. In case of inclement weather, the meeting will be rescheduled for Tuesday April 2, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the same location.
