Purpose of the meeting The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) announces the rescheduling (due to inclement weather) of Residential Working Group Meeting to develop an Implementation Plan (IP) to restore water quality in several Mattaponi River watersheds. The Residential Working Group meeting, along with an Agricultural Working Group meeting held on November 16, 2018, will provide public input to inform the development of an Implementation Plan to restore water quality in portions of the Mattaponi River watershed. The purpose of the Residential Working Group will be to identify best management practices to reduce bacteria coming from developed lands, obstacles to implementation of such practices, and practical solutions to these obstacles. Pollution from septic systems, stormwater runoff from developed lands, and pet wastes will be focus areas for discussion. The group will also evaluate partnerships and identify implementation strategies that are relevant to the local area and consider a reasonable timeline in which to achieve implementation goals. DESCRIPTION OF AREA COVERED BY THE PLAN: The Mattaponi River watershed is very large, and comprised of many smaller watersheds. Fourteen smaller watersheds were included in a 2016 Bacteria TMDL report for the Mattaponi River, after they had been identified as impaired and included on the Clean Water Act §303(d) list for not supporting Virginia’s water quality recreation use standard due to the presence of fecal bacteria. All of these watersheds will be addressed in the Implementation Plan, including: Brock Run, Chapel Creek, Doctors Creek, Glady Run, Maracossic Creek, Mat River, Matta River, Mattaponi River, Motto River, Po River, Polecat Creek, Poni River, Reedy Creek and Root Swamp. The IP area falls primarily within Caroline, King and Queen, and Spotsylvania Counties; and smaller sections of King William and Orange Counties are also within the plan area. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: To proactively address the potential that inclement weather or another emergency condition could affect this meeting, an Alternate Date/Time of Thursday, January 17, 2019 from 10am – Noon is also announced (at the same location, as shown above). Please note that if Caroline County schools or the library is closed on January 9th due to inclement weather, the meeting will be postponed to this alternate date (January 17th). | |
