| Purpose of the meeting MEETING DESCRIPTION: The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and its contractor, Virginia Tech’s Biological Systems Engineering Department, will present a draft watershed plan for review by the committee. This plan has been developed with input from the local community in an effort to address a series of water quality impairments on Cunningham Creek and its tributaries. The group will also discuss plans for the final public meeting for this planning effort. DESCRIPTION OF IMPAIRMENTS: These streams do not host a healthy and diverse population of aquatic life, and are listed as impaired for the “General Benthic (Aquatic life)” water quality standard. A benthic stressor analysis performed at the beginning of the TMDL process indicated that sediment is the primary stressor to the benthic community. In addition, the Middle Fork of Cunningham Creek has a high concentration of E. coli bacteria, which prevents it from meeting the “Primary Contact” water quality standard. HOW TO PARTICIPATE: Meetings of the Technical Advisory Committee are open to the public and all interested parties are welcome. In addition, written comments are always accepted. In the case of inclement weather, the meeting will be postponed until January 22nd, to be held at the same time and place. This meeting will be open to the public and all are welcome.
