The top priority of schools should be to provide a welcoming and safe environment for all students. Unfortunately, our public schools have failed transgender and gender expansive students in this regard far too often. Research from reputable organizations like the Trevor Project have shown trans students who are supported and affirmed experience better mental health outcomes and lower instances of suicidality. As I prepare to enter the teaching profession, I hope I can be part of VA schools that do better for our trans and nonbinary students.
