I am a lifelong citizen and Virginia voter. I strongly urge all Virginia lawmakers to reject Petition 432, which seeks to deny individuals of their dignity and humanity. As a parent to two teenage males, my greatest hope is that they treat all persons with kindness and respect. As a female, the times that I have felt most afraid were because of CIS males who believed they had a right to comment on and touch me without my consent. I have yet to hear of an individual being raped by a trans person in a locker room. Rather, it’s the trans person who fears for their own safety and who deserves to be protected and treated with dignity. In schools, we should be focused on teaching our children to think critically, build skillsets and to be respectful of the humanity of others. We should be giving, especially our most vulnerable populations, food, safety and care. Instead, with this Petition, we are establishing that one should be treated with respect only when they conform to a specific religious belief, which does not belong in our schools. Again, I urge you to reject Petition 432.
